After realization of the inhumane atrocities that many people suffered at the start and throughout World War II, many were determined to ensure that another Holocaust will never happen again and that everyone, especially the poor, hungry, displaced, marginalized and disenfranchised will have institutions and laws to protect them. Eleanor Roosevelt regarded the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as her greatest achievement. The Declaration states that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security and that all regardless of gender, ethnicity, sex, language, religion or political opinion are equal before the law: Article One, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
Yet, the promises enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights remain unfilled for tens of millions of people around the world. These tens of millions of people are still unaware of the Universal Human Rights Declaration and are unable to demand for their governments’ and leaders’ to be held accountable for inhumane policies and practices before international law and courts. For many in western societies and communities it is unimaginable that human rights are still not a reality for all the people of the world despite the influence of the internet, journalism and many secular and civil society organizations that are willing to expose global inhumane atrocities’. For others in western societies, horror emerges when they see photographs or read vivid descriptions of these atrocities regardless if these inhumane acts are motivated by political and religious reasons or for ethnic cleansing or genocide. These inhumane acts are persecution by ethnic profiling through identification and documentation of specific ethnic groups, imprisonment, expulsion, war rape, disfigurement, defacement or killing to achieve homogeneity, majority of power and greed by individuals and groups in country and by foreign governments (of whom many signed the Universal Human Rights Declaration), corporations and consumers. Absolutely no government, society, community nor individual regardless of geographic region or global location, gender, ethnicity, sex, language, religion or political opinion can say, “We did not know, what can we do?” nor continue to sit back in complacency and say, “We are fulfilling our destiny.”
In the context of genocide the UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Mr. Francis Deng, said, “This is an impossible mandate that must be made possible. Genocide, nearly always the result of identity-related conflicts, is one of the most heinous of crimes on which humanity must unite to prevent and punish. However, for the same reason, it evokes denial from both the perpetrators and those who would be called upon to intervene to prevent or stop it. This is why our strategy focuses on prevention, by responding to situations before positions harden into denial.” In a nutshell, historically this is a soft approach to do little too late.
Despite the past 60 years, this month’s anniversary of the adoption and proclamation (December 10, 1948) by 48 countries, arrived and faded into history with very little to no remark or deliberation by the original 48 adopting countries and their respective governments, Statesman, Community Leaders, Global Activists, Spiritual Leaders or Human Rights Advocates of this auspicious declaration.
“The Destiny of Human Right in the hands of our all citizens in all our communities.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt~
All life is precious and we have a sacred responsibility for ourselves and one another. Together, we can make a difference. Be a voice for those who have no voice or can’t yet speak for themselves. Email or call your local statesman or stateswoman and the UN for end to criminalizing and dehumanizing people for who they are or for who they love. Demand for the promises within the Universal Human Rights Declaration be fulfilled for all and an accounting for all the millions of dollars spent the last 60 years. End these humanitarian crises around the world by using your warmth of heart, your voice, and your spending power.
Are actions like these really necessary? When does retaliation become their own version of genocide? Do two wrongs make a right? When will people stop and think? This is gut churning, horrific and abhorrent!

I Never thought I would Say this about Israel… WHAT A BUNCH OF BUTCHERS! SHAME SHAME SHAME SHAME ON YOU ISRAEL!
I read the words of man’s history
written down long ago
of battles that raged across the world
as the sea’s tides did ebb and flow
I listened closely to thoughts of men
and watched the battles unfold
but little was learned in eons of time
loss of life grew to levels untold
Echoes in time, the battle cries heard
and lines were drawn in the sand
Warning bells sounded, ignored and unheard
and groups of men, together did band
They muted the clash of steel on steel
and fire dropped from the sky
the gauntlet was thrown; the bells did peal
for revenge, an eye for an eye.
Men saw the forging of iron wills
And secret plans were created
Men sent off to scour the hills
To search for the man most hated
Fueled by false promises, lying words
minds plotted, gave rise to invasion
A foreign country and its people now bear
the brunt of his gift of persuasion
In his address to the nation
He gave no apology
Where scant years before, to a people he swore
they have not the technology
Weapons of mass destruction were sought
He swore no clemency
not found, there was no evidence
Forsook diplomacy
Turned to the people, his heart was hardened
And shook his fist in the air,
trust me he said, I know they are there
and our fight is fair
Then under the guise of darkness
Another plan was hatched
And allowed was he, he began to turn the press
As the world looked on and watched
Ships then set sail on stormy seas
And on far off shores came to rest
Loaded with men, bulging arms,
Flexed their necks, the best of the best
Unloaded their weapons, set for destruction
And once there, did wait for instruction
Once given the nod, all said and done
The invader promised reconstruction
Now the sounds of thunder roar through the sky
And the bombs reach their destinations
Discarded their oaths pledged in membership
They belonged to the United Nations
Like the broken treaties and peace accords
with Indian nations long past
When double edged words and razor’s edge swords
ensured that the die was cast
In the time of the man called yellow hair
A nation downtrodden and crushed
Women and children, a burden to bear
Onto reservations were pushed
When blankets given a people for warmth
held the secret ingredient of death
And as before mothers do mourn
as their children take their last breath
Echoes of times gone by now present
caused by another great clash
Men rise up, everyone braces,
set are they for backlash
A mighty man’s words fired a nation
and they fed on the flames of wrath
embers were stoked with the bones of the dead,
fires blazed a new path
Painted with blood of the people
Their bodies grow cold on the ground
The spark that once lit their lives
Blunted, disposed not found
And of their land, were dispossessed
Deposed also, was their leadership
While gunfire blazed all around
A nation pledged its kinship
And many more lives were lost as they hustled
And people flocked in the rush
To follow the ranting, the eye of the eagle
in the land of the burning Bush
From time to time in the name of religion,
lands torn asunder by fire
Unfounded claims and empty finds
only caused to increase this man’s ire
The decision made he then wielded the lash
and cracked the whip with power
Took the bull by the horns, through stubbornness sworn
now the man of the hour.
Hungry and greedy for riches of lands
and barrels of oil did he plunder
And through this greed and quest for more
he did tear a land asunder
The wheels set in motion the glutton did forge
a plan to lay waste a nation
A well trodden path in the valley of greed
To the sound of hall’o’Burton’s oration
History needs to repeat it seems
despite the best efforts of Jung
While mothers in lands near and far
Do mourn the death of their young
Over yonder hills, the battle did rage
and warring men did swarm
Where a while ago they spent several weeks
battling the long desert storm
Go and forage and search the land
commanded the old burning Bush
And now once again do warring men rush
and look to that nation to crush
Everyone loses, men fall to the ground
and are cradled in the arms of the grave
While the man of power, from his place in white tower,
continues to rant and to rave
Though the loss of life blood does not deter
nor turn his mind from the fight
Nor does it quench his thirst for blood,
He feeds on power and might
To play the game and sacrifice men’s lives,
pawns on the checkered board, both sides
He gathers the world posse, and on their backs
bored knights in his service, he rides
The mighty man to the world he berates,
do it my way or else he dictates
No matter the lies or half truths he utters,
his cause is just or so he States
Like men of old through power and might
who stained the fields, and bloodied them red
Again we find mothers who mourn,
their children lay dead, more tears are shed
Unease, unrest, hate and intolerance,
both sides seeded and sown take root
Lives torn apart, and innocence slain,
fragile peace dies under the boot
Marched on and found nothing then claimed to fight
for the people we must ensure their rights
And demolished homes and neighborhoods
and then he continued, ignored their plights
He swore an oath and riddled the land
With a hail of bullets, while bombs did rain
Screams howled in the wind and curdled the blood,
the death toll mounted again
The fruit of the land , once prized and luscious,
now shriveled and abhorrent
Now despised, rights are discarded
Just so that his spleen might vent
He bared his teeth, honed razor sharp
on splintered and naked bones
of the innocent caught in the crossfire
And overhead on flew the drones
Trapped by the silken strands of thoughts
woven into the spider’s web
Through hidden intentions the currents torment,
fear rises, does not ebb.
This man’s edicts and actions decreed
A ripple effect gathered strength and speed
The web of deceit spins out of control
A new trap created by passion and greed
A witch hunt continues, the cauldron bubbles
It boils, and when stirred, emotional troubles
Burning the hearts of mothers who mourn
Their children, life from whom was torn
Lessons once learned, now lost in the haze
While fires rage through the Bush
Into the mind of man he dictates
his rule, follow me or I’ll push
In a battle worn world, the gap widens distance
The causeways flood with tears
Brother to brother much life is lost
Causes bled throughout the years
History repeats, how many times have we seen
that bloodshed causes division
How many must die, how long shall it be,
when shall we cease this derision
Must we pave the road with corruption and hate
drive a wedge to the core of the earth
and breach the heart of the nation
that erupts from much slandered worth
Gather the skeletal remains of that land
children lay dead, felled by guns and their bullets
Earth shaking battle tanks roll like thunder,
While warships sail into the inlets
Shattered lives, shell-shocked people
Gathered together, a herd
And once again, through battle cries
the beat of the drum is heard
The warning bells sounded, but were ignored,
Only to fall on deaf ears
And to this day they still remain
Unheard, a thousand years
How many times must this world be divided,
when will our hearts conquer strife
When will this world heed the cries of its mothers
Who brought to the world all life
Despair their lost efforts in birthing the world
at the mercy of hovering vultures
In lands close and far, Mothers still mourn
the death of their children, their cultures

Recently something happening in the world was brought to my attention and I felt it at the soul level that this needed to be addressed before the world sat idly by and allowed another holocaust to happen. We’ve all seen, in the annals of our history, that inaction, indifference and outright unconcern for fellow human beings in this world allows for the rampant disregard for the sanctity of life, allows for travesties of justice, allows for genocide, allows for segregation and ultimately the destruction and murder of an untold number of lives.
It is with this in mind that I ask you to consider and draw your attention to the plight facing countless Roma in Italy today.
Over the course of the past 12 hours, an article written on Bloomberg.com came to my attention and subsequent searching brought more news articles to my attention all dealing with the same issue. The link to this news story is :

The title of the news article “Berlusconi Targets Gypsies Amid Bias Against EU’s Top Minority” speaks for itself and addresses the circumstances that I feel are the beginnings of another holocaust, and to my mind, one of the very first moves Hitler and his minions also employed at the outset of Nazi era.
In this news story, the plight of one 12 year old Rebecca, is glossed over as a lead in to what the Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi’s intentions are, and quoting from this article, the indications are that “After coming to power in April, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi focused more attention on the issue with plans to conduct a census of Roma camps to ferret out illegal immigrants as part of a crackdown on crime.”
This news story goes on to highlight the intolerance of over 10 million Gypsies, the segregation of the Gypsies into settlements on the outskirts of towns, the indifference that people bear to the deaths of Gypsy children, as was highlighted in a photograph that appeared on July 20th of this year. Further, it goes on to address the temporary limitations on the types of jobs they may have. Yet still, this article also indicates that Berlusconi, on May 30th, signed an order requiring the census of 700 camps of Gypsies, which would include fingerprinting of every adult and child in the Gypsy encampments.
All of this, to my mind, is highly reminiscent of the actions taken just prior to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. More troubling yet is that there appears that very little outcry has occurred in this world condemning these actions outright. For myself, I consider myself to be fairly current with the news and the first I’d heard of this was last night. So I’m very troubled by the lack of media attention to this matter.
Another article from Associated Press, titled “Gypsy leaders accuse Italy of discrimination” was published a few days past highlighting Italy’s harassment and discrimination of Gypsies. The link to this news article is: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/08/02/europe/EU-GEN-Poland-Italy-Gypsies.php
Yet another news article in yesterdays Globe ad Mail addresses Berlusconi’s order deploying troops into the streets of Rome, Turin, Milan, Naples, Palermo and dozens of others cities in Italy.
In a Times Online news story, there is the statement that the troops would be used to guard immigrant detention centres. Ironically in the middle of this news story are the headlines that Arsonists attack Gypsy camp in Rome, and another that indicates Gypsies in Italy to be fingerprinted. Further into the article, it is said that: “The Government claimed that more than half of murders and robberies in Italy were carried out by illegal immigrants. The handling of immigrants and Gypsies by the Berlusconi Government has sparked criticism from human rights groups, the Roman Catholic Church and European bodies.”
In another from news article online from July 8th of this year, it is said that: “Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, a member of the anti-immigrant Northern League party, said last week fingerprinting was needed to fight crime and identify illegal immigrants. Italy officials blamed Gypsies for rising crime. “
The Independent News, in an article from Peter Popham in Rome on July 24th of this year, states: “The campaign against Roma camps, an obsession of the Berlusconi government, will be their main priority. Gianni Alemanno, the Mayor of Rome, said the number of camps would be reduced, and people moved into “solidarity villages”.”
It appears that the initial stages of another Holocaust have already been planned. Will the world allow for another genocide? Will the world sit back again and watch as countless are slaughtered because it takes too much effort to step up and say enough?
These are but a few of the news stories that I was able to pull up on the Internet. I’m certain a dedicated research team would be able to compile a much more in-depth study of current events in Italy and the seeming stages that will allow for another wholesale slaughter of innocent people because they don’t appear to fit in with the current regime.
As troubling as this is, more troubling yet is the seeming silence on a global scale. Yes there are a few news print stories, but I have not seen anything televised that prompts people to sit up and take notice and move them into action.
APATHY SEEMS TO BE THE FLAVOUR OF THE DAY….
On this day, December 9, 2008, we revisit an agreement that was reached among the nations to prevent genocide sixty years ago. This agreement was named the “Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide” and came into being as a direct result of the murder of millions during the Nazi Holocaust. This was a time that mankind witnessed some of the most heinous and horrific crimes against humanity and the nations pledged to join together for the common cause of preventing genocide.
Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations continues to attempt to make strides in raising awareness of the events transpiring in the Sudan and the DR Congo.
It is appalling that the nations of the world appear to be lackadaisical in addressing the current atrocities and crimes against humanity in the Sudan and in the DR Congo. A united and decisive response is required.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH….
Many human rights are being violated, mass murders, mass tortures, mass rapes, and events that are destroying children’s lives and minds because the DR Congo is recruiting them as soldiers. Is it recruitment or kidnapping? Depends upon your point of view I suppose.
Will the people of this world once again revisit the lessons of the past since we obviously haven’t learned from it. The apathetic response from world nations is reprehensible.
My thoughts,
Deborah
In an article posted on the UN News Centre http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=29219&Cr=democratic&Cr1=congo the UN Peacekeeping chief indicates that the situation is dire and it is imperative that action be taken immediately to protect the DR Congo population…
Unfortunately it seems that nobody is listening once again… Selective hearing process? Inconvenient times? ohh wait yes, we have to bail out car makers and morally bankrupt bankers first.. that apparently takes precedence over life and death…
How many thousands more must die? Another Million maybe? Another Ethnic Cleansing? Another Genocide? WAIT I thought the global community said NEVER AGAIN … Maybe they ought to revisit the meaning of NEVER AGAIN. Did they mean never again MAYBE?
There is no doubt that the situation in the DR Congo is deteriorating quickly and from some of the news articles I’ve read, it appears that the DR Congo is also recruiting child soldiers… How many children’s lives do the nations of this world feel that the DR Congo should sacrifice before the world sits up and takes notice that yet another genocide is taking place.
When do we all say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.. this is madness..
I’ll be writing about some of the world issues I wonder about and attempt to understand. Welcome to my world as I see it.
What kind of do world we live in that creates people and nations who stand by and watch genocide take place and do nothing to help until thousands and thousands lay dead?
Sudan 2003-present (400,000 deaths)
Congo 2008, (“thousands upon thousands of rapes” U.N. quote)
Rwanda 1994 (800,000 deaths)
Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina 1992-1995 (200,000 deaths),
Cambodia 1975-1979 (2,000,000 deaths)
Hitler’s Nazi Holocaust 1938-1945 (6,000,000 deaths)
Nanking 1937-1938 (300,000 deaths)
Stalin’s Forced Famine in the Ukraine 1932-1933 (7,000,000 deaths)
Turkey 1915-1918 (1,500,000 Armenians dead)
By all accounts it seems that although the global community has vowed to never forget, and vowed “never again”, the powers that be in the global communities omitted the words ”unless it’s inconvenient to us” and their vows should have read ”never forget unless it’s inconvenient to us” and “never again unless it’s inconvenient to us“.
Granted there are groups of people and organizations desperately trying to bring attention to the current conflicts and address the conflicts, but the general apathy of people in this world is telling as the rapes, murders, travesties and atrocities continue daily.
Are we to only care if it’s our own that are attacked? And if it’s our own that are attacked and the rest of the world looks on and watches while wholesale slaughter goes on… I wonder if we would re-examine our own apathy to the genocide in the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, in Darfur, and in the Congo.
